More than 80 Vietnamese rice industry professionals representing nearly 50 rice growing, processing and exporting businesses and associations are attending the sixth World Rice Conference in Cambodia on November 19-20.
At the opening ceremony on November 19, Cambodian Commerce Minister Sun Chanthol called on rice exporters to develop a rice trade strategy to ensure food security and legitimate rights of consumers, businesses and farmers.
Participants from 40 countries and territories initiated by the industry trade publication The Rice Trader discuss measures to improve the efficiency of rice production and export, ensure the sustainability of rice cultivation, and handle obstacles in export activities as well as trends and challenges facing rice exports in 2015.
The conference will present the World Best Rice Award to the most delicious rice.
Secretary General of the Vietnam Food Association (VFA) Huynh Minh Hue said the event provides a good chance for Vietnamese businesses to promote their trademarks and meet and set up trade relations with foreign partners.
Vietnam is currently focusing on improving the quality of rice and its value to help rice growers increase their profits toward forming a global brand name for Vietnamese rice.
Southeast Asia is considered a key rice production area in the world with leading rice exporters like Thailand and Vietnam. In recent years, Vietnam has been the world’s second largest rice exporter.
Vietnam is expected to export around 6.5-7 million tonnes of rice this year.
