Fungus deadly to AIDS patients found to grow on trees: Researchers have pinpointed the environmental source of fungal infections that have been sickening HIV/AIDS patients in Southern California for decades. It literally grows on trees

Researchers have pinpointed the environmental source of fungal infections that have been sickening HIV/AIDS patients in Southern California for decades. It literally grows on trees. The discovery is based on the science project of a 13-year-old girl, who spent the summer gathering soil and tree samples from areas around Los Angeles hardest hit by infections of the fungus named Cryptococcus gattii (CRIP-to-cock-us  GAT-ee-eye). Cryptococcus, which encompasses a number of species including C. gattii, causes life-threatening infections of the lungs and brain and is responsible for one third of all AIDS-related deaths. The study, which appears Aug. 21 in PLOS Pathogens, found strong genetic evidence that three tree species -- Canary Island pine, Pohutukawa and American sweetgum -- can serve as environmental hosts and sources of these human infections. "Just as people who travel to South America are told to be careful about drinking the water, people who visit other areas like

British friend of James Foley: Stop sharing video

War photographer and correspondent Paul Conry, who was born in Liverpool, has made a heartfelt appeal to the people to stop sharing the video of his comrade, American journalist James Foley, being murdered. Footage recently released by the Islamic State, a terrorist organization in the Middle East, shows Foley being beheaded by a masked militant speaking with a British accent. The group claimed that Foley was killed in retaliation for the U.S. air strikes in the region. Conry, who had worked alongside his good friend Foley in other areas of conflict and recently survived being bombed in Syria, said that spreading the gruesome video was doing the Islamic State’s work for the group. “What happened was stage-managed by people who are very, very media aware, and they know too well that nothing can be banned on the Internet,” Conry said. “They want it to go viral; they want as many people in the world to look at it. So in many ways by sharing [the video] and propagating, we fal

First African military aircraft makes maiden test flight

Local Source:  France24  August 22, 2014 The first military aircraft to be fully developed in Africa has made its first test flight in Pretoria, South Africa, marking a milestone in the continent’s aviation history. The versatile, multi-purpose aircraft was designed and built by two South African aeronautical companies – Aerosud and the Paramount Group. A team of about 60 African engineers and technicians spent three years working on the first prototype. Of the aircraft’s 6,000 parts, 98 percent were designed using locally produced software. The plane is described as being modest in both size and design. It consists of a helicopter fuselage with a double tail inspired by the bombers used during World War II and an antenna at the front whose shape resembles an insect’s stinger. Designed for multiple roles, the aircraft can be used for anti-poaching missions and border patrols as well as anti-trafficking, anti-piracy, anti-insurgent and anti-terror operations among oth

IS threatens to destroy world’s largest Buddhist temple

Local Source:  Dyah Swastantika  August 23, 2014 After releasing the video of the beheading of American photographer James Foley, the Islamic State terrorist group – formerly known as ISIS – has begun psychologically terrorizing Indonesia. The group has pledged to destroy the Borobudur Temple in the country’s Central Java Province, although its motive was not stated in detail. The 1,200-year-old Borobudur temple, which is home to hundreds of Buddhist statues, is the largest Buddhist temple in the world.  Indonesia is home to the largest population of Muslims in the world. The threat was revealed through a post on the Facebook page “We Are the Islamic State,” which is believed to be the Islamic State’s official page. The army commander of Central Java, Major General Sunindyo, said that anyone in the country would feel awful if the threat was actually carried out and has asked all citizens to work together to prevent the IS’s plan from becoming a reality. The planes flew together over nearby Canwick Hill in Lincoln before heading to RAF Marham in Norfolk. Bill Ramsey, captain of the Vulcan for the flight, said it was a "special day". The flights were timed to coincide with a turf-cutting ceremony for the new Bomber Command Memorial at the International Bomber Command Centre , Canwick Hill. A UK-based Lancaster was joined by the only other airworthy model, which came from Canada Mr Ramsey said: "I don't think that there is much doubt that this will be my favourite ever da

Wearables has become a household name. Could nearables be next?

The start-up  Estimote  announced on Thursday that it’s releasing what it calls stickers, Bluetooth-powered beacons that are about the size of jagged quarter. With their lean profile, they can be stuck to common objects, furthering the company’s vision of empowering how we connect with physical spaces. While Estimote’s initial, golf ball-sized beacons lend themselves to being attached to walls and ceilings at retails stores and sports stadiums, the stickers open a new frontier. “Before it was impractical to hide a beacon in a shoe, or attach one to your shoe. Now it becomes pretty practical,” said Steve Cheney, Estimote’s senior vice president for business. For example, an Estimote sticker attached to your dog’s collar could give you an idea of how active it’s been and exactly where it is. Imagine tracking how much exercise your dog is getting. (Estimote) In an emerging field, Estimote hopes its distinct and mobile sensors — which sense movement and temperature — will capture
